Be The Indigo Demon Airport Horse You Wish To See In The World.
Friends, it’s Wednesday and I am sprinting towards my PTO after spending Sunday and Monday in Cincinnati for a meeting. So after two 6 am flights in two time zones within 48 hours, just a reminder that getting up for the airport at 3:45 AM ET hits different when your body’s still in PT mode. Anyways, all to say… where am I, again?
Speaking of PTO: Thursday will be my last day working before I take two whole weeks of time away from work, returning to the real world on May 22nd. I haven’t taken this much time off in one chunk since before I started working at my current gig, and I am very much looking forward to attempting to completely unplug from being constantly on screens all day long. So as such, I won’t be posting as much, and anything I do post will be more along the lines of “wow, let’s talk about this magical amazing wonderful brilliant thought I had when I wasn’t constantly mainlining blue light and bad news straight to my eyeballs.
And I think one thing I’m going to be thinking about is what, and how, I write about everything that’s happening around us. I love getting the chance to have coffee with y’all in the morning, but this daily ritual of caffeine, internet and bad jokes has unfortunately been sidelined by other less fulfilling but seemingly more important/urgent/job-required demands. So I want to figure out how I can reintroduce this daily practice in my life, and it may be in a different format than what we’ve been doing here since 2015 (that’s right, the first Missive was in 2015, we’ve been doing this rodeo for nearly eight years now…) Send feedback, comments, ideas, encouragement, tips on maintaining a daily writing practice, anything! It would be much appreciated.
So anyhoo, let’s get into the internet, shall we?
I’m now realizing we haven’t spent much time talking about Blucifer the demon horse at Denver’s airport alongside every other conspiracy theory and, frankly, that’s nerdy extremely online newsletter malpractice on my part: ‘A Towering, Terrifying Demon Horse Isn’t Even the Weirdest Part’ (NYT)
Welp, I never worried about fractured fingers as a daily risk of injury in my life BUT NOW I WORRY: Dog-walking injuries may be more common than you think (Washington Post)
Heck yes: Strict abortion bans fail in deep-red South Carolina and Nebraska (NPR)
RIP Canadian music legend Gordon Lightfoot, go listen to his best work: ‘Gordon Lightfoot’s 10 Essential Songs’ (NYT)
“the path to well-being lies in seeking to fulfill the “intrinsic” rewards associated with personal growth, engagement in emotionally gratifying relationships, giving to others, and your own physical health. Pursuit of these goals helps you satisfy your needs for autonomy (volition), competence (ability), and relatedness (closeness to others).”: ‘To Be Happy for the Rest of Your Life, Seek These Goals’ (Psychology Today)
And finally, stop whatever you are doing at this very moment and watch this over-the-top lovely homage to San Francisco via a puppet at a piano and a song that takes me back to college
Appreciate you all. Be kind to yourselves, get outside, drink some water, pet a dog.
