If I Stayed In The Woods, Would Anyone Notice? BRB, I’d Like To Return To My Vacation Tout Suite, SVP.
Darlings! I am back online after a week of hiking and reading and sleeping and eating. I deleted Twitter off of my phone at the top of last week and hoo boy, was it the best decision I’ve made in a long time. It was really nice to unplug and slow down.
I did get wind about Kamala Harris being chosen as Biden’s VP pick and screamed out loud when I found out. Holy hell, I had no idea how much the idea of Senator Harris staring down Pence on a debate stage would make me happy, but it sure did, and does. And as a reminder, in addition to being the first Black woman and first person of Indian descent to be on a major party ticket, she’s only one of four women to get on a presidential ticket. That’s right, in all these years, there have only been FOUR WOMEN (Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, Sarah Palin in 2008, Hillary Clinton in 2016, now Senator Harris) on a presidential ticket. She’ll make a spectacular VP and I am so freaking excited. LET’S DO THIS!
Speaking of which, there are only 89 days until the 2020 American Presidential election - what are YOU doing to help? This weekend, I spent time volunteering for Vote From Home 2020 doing outreach to swing states to remind voters to apply for their mail-in ballot early.
TO THE INTERNET!
Fun fact! The Dude Trump installed as Postmaster General and is currently dismantling one of the greatest achievements of democracy that also happens to be enshrined in the constitution donates tons of cash to GOP lawmakers. So guess who isn’t criticizing him? COOL COOL COOL COOL COOL.
A statue of suffragettes will be unveiled in Central Park at the end of the month, marking the first time there will be statues of non-fictional women. Which caused me to google whether or not there are statues of non-fictional women in Golden Gate park… and I don’t think there are (all I could find was the “Pioneer Mother” statue which celebrates “the self-sacrificing women… with their little ones at their side” who “civilized” the American west.) So this weekend, I’m heading out to the park to try and find whether or not there are any non-mythical representations of women in the park, because I need to walk more AND need something non-COVID to get livid about. Wish me luck!
Speaking of COVID-related things to get livid about: “Anti-maskers explain themselves.” That’s it: who’s setting up a mask-mandatory / pants-optional commune and how do I get an invite?
Headline I am screaming about: The Pentagon Made A Unit To Investigate UFOs And It's Not Keeping It Secret Anymore. IT GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP!!!
And finally, imagine my excitement when I read the headline that the true story of the lost Roanoke Colony had possible been discovered! Then I actually read the piece and it turns out that the settlers likely just up and moved in with their indigenous neighbors. That’s right, the “Croatoans saved the colonists by taking them away from Roanoke Island to their Hatteras Island village.” So it’s not an alien invasion or zombie ghost story, but at least the Croatoans are getting credit for saving their English neighbors, not just reduced to a term on a seemingly-cryptic note a settler posted on a tree.
Y’all are great. Be kind to each other, and wear a darned mask!
xoxo Amy
