Let's Get Back In The Saddle, Shall We?
Good morning, my doves! It’s been weeks since I last sat down with you, and oh how much has gone down.
First off, my much-anticipated (and needed) vacation was tossed out a Southern California window once a COVID test told us that the hottest travel destination for this hot girl summer was isolating in a hotel before (very carefully) driving back to the Bay Area to further isolate in my apartment. And while this, my second tango with COVID, was easier than my first, this ongoing fatigue and brain fog is proving challenging. So a reminder: this pandemic is not over, as data, headlines and the massive number of “welp, I guess I’ve joined this club” texts I received indicate. Stay safe out there, test often, and utilize Test to Treat resources in your community to get the care you need!
So, yea, there’s been a lot going on, though I did try to stay away from the news while I was sick. Now my Instapaper is full of stories I haven’t read, Twitter remains the haunted garbage fire we all know and “love”, and every time I open Spotify, the dystopic level of my new podcast episode list remains at parody.
So, dear reader, we’ll need to find our footing together. I’ll continue to try and live in the land of the humans if you’ll grant me the grace off knowing that this here newsletter will be even more sporadic than usual, and that my focus and proofing abilities are a bit fried.
We’ve got this. Keep going. And here’s some stuff from the internet.
This is very, very scary: A Drag Queen Was Interrupted By A Right-Wing Group During A Library’s Story Hour, And Police Are Investigating (BuzzFeed)
Of course I’ve watched the first half of Stranger Things 4, and yes, I’m just as (re)obsessed with that Kate Bush song and can’t get it out of my head. And to the Kate Bush super fans, I apologize for jumping on this pop culture bandwagon (j/k, it’s an awesome tune, and I shall not apologize for loving the fact that another generation has driven it to the top of the charts. Such an awesome development!) And Mashable’s take on it was especially impactful: Why the 'Running Up That Hill' scene in 'Stranger Things' is so powerful.
I think this headline way oversimplifies the argument being made here but it’s still a good read: Why the viral narrative of San Francisco as a ‘failed city’ is an obvious lie (SF Chronicle, h/t Friend of the Missive Daniel)
I’ve avoided watching the January 6 committee hearings live, lest I fully fall into a pit of despair, instead opting to devour nearly every piece of resulting media created (healthy, I know!). So can someone please tell me how I can pivot careers towards GOP Grifter, because I too would like to get paid mad bank to spew hateful nonsense in public: Publix heiress paid Kimberly Guilfoyle’s $60,000 speaking fee on Jan. 6 (The Washington Post)
Heh heh heh: We, The Herbivores Of Jurassic Park, Have Unionized. Here Are Our Demands (McSweeney’s)
And finally, HELL YES, my time has come: Punctuality Is Having a Moment (NYT)
Also, please send healing vibes to Ms. Orca Floofers, who had her wee puppy reproductive organs removed this week to prevent me from ever becoming a doggy grandparent. Here’s cute/pathetic pic for you to enjoy!
Get outside, drink some water, and be kind to yourself, won’t you?
Xoxo Amy
