My New Love Language Is Hiring A Dance Troupe To Re-Enact Awkward Moves
Dearests! These past two days, I think I achieved peak Amy weekend: temple on Friday, yoga both days, sat in a park and played with dogs, read a book on how Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke the Weinstein #MeToo story, reorganized my closet, helped clean a neighbor’s windows, learned an acoustic version of Natural Woman on guitar, cooked a metric tonne of braised meats, and built a spreadsheet for all of my plants, like a 100 percent normal and well-adjusted human does on a weekend #humblebrag
I know what you’re thinking: I am the coolest person you have ever met, hands down. And you're right about that. So here’s some stuff to read/watch!
My favorite show and yours Fleabag won big at the Emmys, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s acceptance speech for best writing makes me grin: “It’s just really wonderful to know — and reassuring — that a dirty, pervy, angry, messed up woman can make it to the Emmys”.
Awful things I learned in this article on Canada’s history of blackface: a) The man who wrote the melody for O Canada played in minstrel shows in blackface, b) Slavery wasn’t abolished in Canada until 1834, c) “minstrelsy was very common throughout Canada into the 1970s”. So let’s toss the “Canadians aren’t racist” trope into the garbage, eh?
I LOVE this Outside advice column on why rejection and how you handle it is a good thing to experience, because when asked about what to do when you lose out on your dream job, advice-giver Blair Braverman says “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t throw your hat in the ring. It means you should throw your hat in more rings”. THIS IS GOOD ADVICE FOR ALL THINGS.
Charlie Rose (allegedly) did some awful things, part a million: Charlie Rose Faces New Harassment Allegations From Makeup Artist.
And finally, did you know that in 2018 Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson from Broad City hired a modern dance group to choreograph and perform an homage to the Elaine dance that they performed at Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor? IT IS EVERYTHING.
Y’all are great. Be kind to each other!
xoxo Amy
