Nevertheless, We Persist.
Last night, Senator Elizabeth Warren was shut down using rarely-invoked Senate protocol when she read a portion of Coretta Scott King’s letter opposing Senator Session’s nomination for a federal bench position, effectively muting her for the remainder of the Sessions debate. I recommend you read Vox’s helpful explainer on what exactly went down, because I was pretty confused myself, especially since it often seems Senators are passive aggressively nasty to one another.
In explaining why he cut Warren off, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”
Instantly, a rallying tagline was tattooed on a million shoulders. Women across twitter applied McConnell’s statement to revolutionary actions of women throughout the ages. What was supposed to be a silencing act meant that I, and so many more, read the Scott King letter for the first time.
But as Greg sergeant at WaPo delves into, this (+ DeVos’s shameful confirmation yesterday ) is only the beginning of Democratic defeats. So buckle in, friends. It continues to be a long four years.
And can I say, that our current state of politics is what Vox was designed for? God bless explainers.
