So, Like, What IF I Discarded 37 Years Of Trying To Be A Good Human And Just... Didn't? And Other Morning News-Generated Nihilism.
My lovely humans, how are we this fine Tuesday morning? I have Ms. Orca Sproodle sitting next to me, attempting to massacre the field of stuffed toys I have purchased for her, occasionally shooting me side eye because I am a loud typer. And if you make it down to the end of this Missive, you’ll find an image of here participating in a Doodle Romp on Saturday.
And hey, there’re a bunch o’ new readers here today, welcome! And if you like what you read, please encourage your friends to subscribe.
ANYHOO, there’s stuff on the internet and it aint going to read itself! Except with AI advancements in news technology, it is one hundred percent doing just that.
LET’S DO THIS!
Since the Trump era of politics, I often get the “hey, at least it isn’t happening in your home country of Canada”, to which I rant for a sold five minutes about how fascistic tendencies no longer stop at borders and that the ever-present influence of amplification machines designed to feed rage beasts means that every country is at very real risk of falling down a scary rabbit hole - and I am promptly banned from that Starbucks. Anyhoo, the capital city of Ottawa is in its 11th day of an occupation by protestors of vaccine mandates, who have draped themselves in maple leaf flags and “desecrated national memorials and threatened local residents” because boo hoo, their lil feelings are hurt they can’t go around infecting people with an infectious disease, all in the name of “FREEDOM” when their country NEVER FOUGHT A WAR OF INDEPENDENCE AND THAT’S BEEN A PART OF OUR WHOLE SCHTICK FROM THE BEGINNING ahhhhhhh, I am just so angry about and scared of this. (I’m following Ending Protest Requires More Police, Ottawa Chief Says on NYTimes, but you should also check out CBC for Canada-generated info.)
I was never a work from home person before the pandemic, but I’ve come to love the flexibility and lack of commute that being stuck in my living room afforded me. I’m also working many more hours a week. In the NYT, Elizabeth Spiers delves into how this arrangement benefits employers in outsized ways: What We Lose When Work Gets Too Casual
I am wondering the same thing: What does Ivanka Trump know about Jan. 6? Congress is asking (Associated Press)
Back in my day, it was a really, really bad thing when presidents destroyed documents: ‘He never stopped ripping things up’: Inside Trump’s relentless document destruction habits (Washington Post) And by the way, Hillary Clinton has the best and only response to this:
And finally, I told this story on Twitter, but it bears repeating here: when my parents came to visit Princeton my freshman year, a massive snow storm closed campus, so I bundled up and trudged over to the Nassau Inn, an historic inn and tavern, to see them. There, in a hallowed town of learning, we stayed in the hotel room and watched the jackass movie. Still one of my fav memories. The ‘Jackass’ Stunts That Are Burned Into Our Brains (The Ringer)
Y’all are great. Drink water, wear your masks, don’t completely disrupt someone else’s day to have a tantrum over not wanting to be a decent human (sorry, still screaming about the protests) and be kind to yourself, won’t you?
xoxo
