Stylebook Twitter is LIT, And Other Statements My 16-Year-Old Self Would Love.
Poppets, it’s a rainy Tuesday in San Francisco, and I’m on my second cup of cold brew, so you KNOW this one’s going to be a doozy / exactly as usual :)
Rep. Duncan Hunter, of “vaping congressman” and “throwing his wife under the bus for the indictment of misusing campaign funds” fame, released islamophobic ads about his opponent. Coolcoolcoolcoolcool ugh.
Yesterday, the Trump administration “began denying visas to same-sex domestic partners of foreign diplomats and United Nations employees, and requiring those already in the United States to get married by the end of the year or leave the country.” This, despite the fact that “only 12% of UN member states allow same-sex marriage.” BTW, who was the Secretary of State that granted U.S. visas to domestic partners of U.S. and foreign diplomats? Why, none other than Hillary Clinton. But you know, it’s not like there was a stark choice in the 2016 that would have prevented outcomes like this [falls into the sea]
DAMMIT, I LOVE THE AP STYLEBOOK TWITTER SO VERY MUCH. Here’s to a limited use of the oxford comma, when appropriate (background: I was trained in oxford comma usage, but have had to use AP style for the last 7 years which led to many the yelling match about commas. Nothing’s changed, but at least I can passive aggressively shoot this tweetstorm out now.)
Really awesome dive into the politics and realities of parental leave in “Want Equality? Make New Dads Stay Home” in the Wall Street Journal (warning: paywall) TL;DR: on average, men don’t take parental leave even when it is offered, because they worry about the impact it will have on their careers. Which, of course, only compounds the career impact it has on their wives and partners. So, in order to make this whole parental leave shebang work, we should make everyone take that time.
So the next time anyone shits on PR people - or, you know, the next day that ends in Y - point them to the fact that Nike was about to drop Colin Kaepernick in 2017 before their top communications executive reminded them just how shitty that move would look in the press, so they kept him on. And now he makes them mad bank, with 80 million views on his commercial. I guess sometimes woke capitalism wins? IDK, nothing matters.
I live for shitty, passive aggressive notes displayed in public. It’s an art form. An art form that would definitely make me cry, should I ever be the target.
My darlings, I promise that should I ever take up space in your brain or memory, I’ll pay rent in the form of animal gifs or bad puns.
Hmmm. That turned out longer than I’d expected. Ah well, more tomorrow :)
Be kind to each other,
xoxo Amy
