Um, Anyone Have Tips On How To Get Through The Next Seven Days? Self-Care Ideas, Or Suggestions On How To Balance Work With The Threat Of Insurrection? My Inbox Is Open.
Sweethearts, it’s Wednesday, it’s still January (surprisingly, after the year we’ve had in this past week) and there’s still a freaking pandemic ravaging this country. That’s it, that’s the first sentence.
Members of Congress are testing positive for COVID because they were locked down during the attack on the Capitol with science-denying Congressional colleagues who refused to wear masks, and I am just so very angry this morning. If you’re not livid reading Rep. (and cancer survivor) Bonnie Watson Coleman’s account of how her months of health and social distancing diligence were tossed out the window because elected members of government refused to put on a damned mask (and laughed at those handing them out), then you’re subscribed to the wrong morning newsletter.
Speaking of livid, and if you liked the podcast shared yesterday, you should check out the latest episode of Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway’s podcast Pivot, where they discuss the implications of deplatforming, and how it’s about hecking time we cut this BS off at the root. (H/t Dad of the Missive for sharing)
Friend of the Missive Emily shared this one, and it is just delicious AND enraging: Ivanka Trump Apparently Thinks She’s Going To Ride This Insurrection Out And Be President One Day. If the reports are true and this woman believes she can skate through the flaming wreckage of the past four years, right back into the good graces of polite society, we need to prevent such reputation laundry from ever being attempted.
Quelle surprise: A Proud Boy in Disguise Helped Lead the Insurrection at the Capitol. Somewhere, Hannah Arendt is screaming at us for not requiring everyone to read Origins of Totalitarianism, because SHE TOLD US. Also, as I’ve mentioned before, I wish we’d all be required to read Deborah Lipstadt’s Beyond Belief: The American Press And The Coming Of The Holocaust, 1933- 1945 because we’ve seen this movie before, folks. And btw, if you haven’t read those books, you should.
Seriously my doves, please wear your masks. And read your history. And hold people accountable. And be kind to each other, won’t you?
xoxo Amy
