Woke Baes, Creationists, CBO Scores, and Avocado Toasts: A Love Story.
Happy Friday, Mischevians. I hope your week has been full of avocado toast with a side of cortisol-induced night terrors over the state of the country. Or maybe that’s just me.
So here are a couple o’ things for you to read this weekend while we collectively put our fingers in our ears and shout LA LA LA LA.
A Creationist sued the Grand Canyon for religious discrimination because he was not granted a research permit in the National Park. The application from the “young-Earth” creationist who believes that "believes that the Grand Canyon formed after Noah’s flood." In reviewing the permit application, three peer reviews "overwhelmingly denounced the work as not scientifically valid.” As always, I invite friend-of-the-Missive and Geologist Miles to respond to this, and I’ll send it around 😃
As if you need another reason to adore Joss Whedon, he created a video in support of Planned Parenthood. As the Nerdist writes, it’s not exactly subtle, but showing how different women would be impacted by lack of access to the healthcare that Planned Parenthood provides is emotionally impacting.
Speaking of devastating healthcare losses, there’s still no CBO score on the American Health Care Act. And the bill hasn’t been sent to the Senate yet. And if the CBO score isn’t great, then the whole jam-it-through-reconciliation thing might not work? This all shows the limit of my knowledge of US parliamentary procedure.
And because I choose escapism to a time of prior constitutional crisis, I stared reading Jeffrey Toobin’s American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst. And hot damn, it’s a portrait of a Bay Area in crisis as the Summer of Love wore off and the bitter reality of Reagan’s California set in. So good.
Have a good one, darlings. See ya Monday.
